June 10-12 Box Office Results

This is the first weekend in 2016 where the top three spots at the box office are actually held by three newly released films.

Its not surprising where the results landed this past weekend, however there is one thing to point out.  In only its third weekend of release X-Men: Apocalypse is already in the fifth spot on the list and will no doubt be out of the top five by the next weekend. For this year, this is the fastest that a comic book movie has left the top five at the box office.  You would not be wrong in saying that the run for the X-Man film is very disappointing – seeing as it is still about $42,000,000 away from breaking even with its reported budget.  You can check out the rest of the results below.

No 1. The Conjuring 2$40,350,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 2. Warcraft $24,356,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 3. Now You See Me 2 – $23,025,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows $14,800,000. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $61,039,783.

No 5. X-Men: Apocalypse – $10,000,000. Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $136,374,195.

May 27-29 Box Office Results

First off, I know we technically had a 3-day weekend.  However, in the interest of keeping the numbers the same as any other weekend I am not counting the money made on Memorial Day (May 30th).  Some places are counting it, I will not be.

And surprise, surprise! X-Men: Apocalypse took the first place at the box office.  Anyone who suspected anything else has been living under a rock for the past five years.

The real news here is how little Alice Through the Looking Glass made.  The first movie of the franchise, Alice in Wonderland, made over 100 Million in its opening weekend back in 201o.  But this past weekend the sequel couldn’t even make 40% of what its predecessor did.  The rest of the lineup should come as no surprise.  Check out the results below

No 1. X-Men: Apocalypse $65,000,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 2. Alice Through the Looking Glass $26,997,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 3. The Angry Birds Movie – $18,750,000. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $66,403,309.

No 4. Captain America: Civil War $15,379,000. Bringing its total gross in its 4th weekend to $372,855,948.

No 5. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising – $9,274,440. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $38,511,020

Q&A: Theater Allocations and Clearances

Hold on to your hats folks, this question is a doozy.

This question comes in from Bryan Wolfie (great name by the way), and Bryan writes in via email:

With Fox, and recently Universal, getting rid of Movie Allocations which studio do you think is next to give it up and how do you see it changing the movie viewing industry?

First off I have to say, great question!  Also, full disclosure, I had to do a bit of research in order to catch up on all of the details pertaining to this event as it is still ongoing.  So at the end of the answer I will provide links to where I got my information should you, or any of  you readers, care to look into the matter more.

Also, unless I am mistaken, what you mean by “Movie Allocations” is called a clearance agreement; which I will get to in a bit.  And Allocated Zones, are areas in which there is direct competition between theater chains.

To the readers; if you know what clearances are you may want to skip ahead to the bottom a bit, because I’m about  to get long and winded and explain a lot before getting to the meat and potatoes of the question. Continue reading “Q&A: Theater Allocations and Clearances”

Fantastic 4 Sequel to be “Brighter”

But wait! Didn’t Fox take the announced Fantastic 4 sequel off their schedule?

Yes they did.  But that doesn’t seem to have stopped the creative teams at Fox from trying to make a sequel to the 2015 abysmal box office bomb, Fantastic Four.

Writer-Producer, Simon Kinberg, who wrote the screenplay for the 2015 Fantastic Four, spoke with Den of Geek about several matters surrounding the franchise.

Kinberg is done defending the 2015 movie and admits:

“We didn’t make a good movie,” Kinberg said, “and the world voted, and I think they probably voted correctly.  And you can’t make a good movie every time out – not everybody does.  We actually have a pretty good batting average all things considered.  But I think we bade many mistakes when we made that movie – mistakes that we learned from and we wouldn’t repeat.”

Bryan Singer Defending X-Men Movie

Almost a year ago Entertainment Weekly released some photos of the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse movie that featured a few of the X-Men and Apocalypse himself.  And with the release of the those photos came an outcry from all over the internet that shredded the look of the first mutant.  Saying that he looked like the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers villain Ivan Ooze (check out a picture of Ooze here).  It looks like Bryan Singer, director of X-Men: Apocalypse heard the millions of voices crying out in terror.

In an interview with IGN Singer explained his choice for selecting Oscar Isaac for the part of Apocalypse.

There was an image released on Entertainment Weekly, where the effect hadn’t been put in yet, so everyone was – the effect has a pink light on it, and everyone got lit up pink, so people thought Apocalypse was going to be pink.  I was like, ‘No no, they’re all pink. Take a look.’ I’m going to take some blame for that.  My fault, not Entertainment Weekly’s.  That’s the picture I game them.

X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer Showing Before Star Wars

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already shaping up for a massive opening weekend. There is no doubt that anticipation for the film is at record setting levels, with some of those records already being broken. As a result, every movie making studio is looking to attach their biggest trailers in front of the biggest movie that is Star Wars. Which makes sense – its a guaranteed massive audience.  Sure the trailers will be released online, but showing those spectacular visual effects on a theater’s big screen with massive sound is still the best way to sell your movie – and the studios know that.

There have already been reports circulating that the upcoming Marvel film, Captain America: Civil War, will be attached to preview before The Force Awakens.  Seeing as both are being released by the same studio overlord, Disney, that kind of makes sense.  However, there is now news that the first trailer for Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse will also be attached to Star Wars: The Force Awakens!
