October 26-28 Box Office Report

Success and failure, that is the best way to describe this past weekend’s box office!

In the top five positions at the box office there is only one newly released movie, and it’s in position number five!  The submarine-thriller film staring Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman sank at the box office only bringing in a measly $6.6 Million.  Normally this is the type of film that would crack at least $15 Million in its first weekend but bad reviews (check mine out here) and high performance from movies that were already in theaters kept it from raising any higher.

However, for HalloweenA Star is Born, and Venom there is nothing but praise to be given to these films.  Each one has managed to stay in the top three since they were released.  Already this October has broken the record for the most box office dollars ever in this month and it was all due to these three movies drawing in so many box office dollars.  Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, and Sony are popping bottles after the month they had.

You can check out the full box office breakdown below!

No 1. Halloween (2018) – $31,419,070.  Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $126,075,470.

No 2. A Star is Born (2018) – $14,047,079.  Bringing its total gross in its 4th weekend to $148,614,479.

No 3. Venom – $10,652,381.  Bringing its total gross in its 4th weekend to $187,134,695.

No 4. Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween – $7,284,207. Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $38,133,016.

No 5.  Hunter Killer – $6,653,777 in its first weekend of release.

February 17-21 Box Office Results

Although it was a four-day weekend thanks to President’s Day, this was not the greatest weekend for new releases.  Only two out of the three major films being released even made it into the top 5 positions.  And the number one newly released film is sitting in third place.

The first and second position in this past weekend’s box office go to The LEGO Batman Movie and Fifty Shades Darker respectively.  It is no surprise that the animated LEGO film was to be number one for a second weekend in a row, especially when considering that there is currently no other “family friendly” films in theaters at this time.

However, Fifty Shades Darker holding on to the second-place position for a second weekend in a row is impressive.  While the film did see over a 50% drop in revenue from week one to week two, I had anticipated that it would have dropped a bit more.

The Matt Damon stared film, The Great Wall, is the highest grossing newly released film this past weekend.  Bringing in just over $18 Million in the domestic box office.  And while it did make it into third place, the amount the film made is seen by the studio as a bit of a letdown.  Not a full on “flop” by any means, but still disappointing.
