March 8-10 Box Office Report

We just finished with the first weekend that featured Marvel’s first film of 2019, and the box office reflects it!

Captain Marvel just released to great success!  The film became the number one opening weekend origin story superhero movie, and became the 10th biggest opening for a comic book based superhero film of all time!  This puts Captain Marvel in such company as The Dark Knight, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War.

The success of Captain Marvel comes on the heels of 2 months of “controversy” claiming that actress Brie Larson did not want to have white males reviewing her film.  Outlets running these headlines created this fantasy in order to try and hinder the box office of a film with a strong female character in the lead, and they failed.  They failed miserably in misogynistic mission to drag Larson and her film through the mud.  The film made over $153 Million!

The rest of the films in the top 5 box office positions did not make much, but that is to be expected.  Captain Marvel was the only newly released film this past weekend, therefore all of the movies were only able to get the scraps left over by the new Marvel film.

Check out the box office breakdown below!

No 1. Captain Marvel – $153,433,423 in its first weekend of release.

No 2. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World $14,685,005. Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $119,651,130.

No 3. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral $12,465,383 Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $46,295,193.

No 4. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – $3,868,248. Bringing its total gross in its 5th weekend to $97,153,209.

No 5. Alita: Battle Angel – $3,215,344.  Bringing its total gross in its 4th weekend to $78,361,408.

New ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ Movie With Hans Zimmer

If you are a fan of the little yellow, pants wearing, sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea then this will no doubt get you excited.  A new SpongeBob SquarePants movie will be coming to theaters soon.

After the last two movies grossed $140 million and $325 million respectively it is no surprise that the studio would want to go back to this well again and print more money.  This third installment, titled The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: It’s A Wonderful Sponge, is to be written and directed by the creator himself Tim Hill.

The film is set for a release date of July 17, 2020 – and will tell the “origin story” of SpongeBob, and how exactly he got his square pants.  Also, it is being reported that nonother than Hans Zimmer will be scoring the film.  This is huge! Zimmer, being one of Hollywood’s greatest composers, has worked on music featured in The Lion King,  GladiatorThe Last SamuraiInceptionThe Dark Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and many more.  If you are a fan of movies in any capacity then you have hear this man’s iconic music.

President of Paramount Animation, Mireille Soria, said in an interview regarding the new SpongeBob project:

“For the first time ever, we’re going to get to the origin of how little SpongeBob met the rest of the Bikini Bottom gang at summer camp.  The film’s opening will take place at Camp Coral when all of our favorite characters meet for the first time.”

If you are a fan of this franchise, then get excited, 2020 is not that far away.

What do you think of this new SpongeBob movie?  Did you see the other ones?  What is your opinion on Hans Zimmer joining this project?  Leave a comment below and let’s make a discussion out of it.

‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ Review.

The LEGO Batman Movie is a spinoff story based off the Batman character last seen in the hit 2014 film, The LEGO Movie.  Without spoiling anything; it’s about the world’s favorite dark knight fighting to saving Gotham from his greatest enemy, the Joker.  The LEGO Batman Movie is directed by first-time feature film director, Chris McKay, and stars the voice talents of Will Arnett as Batman, Michael Cera as Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, and Ralph Fiennes as Alfred Pennyworth.

Is this movie one of the best DC movies released since Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight in 2008 as some outlets are saying? I’m going to have to say no.  Does it feature one of the best Jokers that we have seen put on the screen? To that, I will say yes.  In no particular order, I would say this Joker, voiced by Zach Galifianakis, falls in the top 3 Joker spots next to Heath Ledger’s Joker as well as Mark Hamill’s Joker from the Batman Animated Series.
