June 10-12 Box Office Results

This is the first weekend in 2016 where the top three spots at the box office are actually held by three newly released films.

Its not surprising where the results landed this past weekend, however there is one thing to point out.  In only its third weekend of release X-Men: Apocalypse is already in the fifth spot on the list and will no doubt be out of the top five by the next weekend. For this year, this is the fastest that a comic book movie has left the top five at the box office.  You would not be wrong in saying that the run for the X-Man film is very disappointing – seeing as it is still about $42,000,000 away from breaking even with its reported budget.  You can check out the rest of the results below.

No 1. The Conjuring 2$40,350,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 2. Warcraft $24,356,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 3. Now You See Me 2 – $23,025,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows $14,800,000. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $61,039,783.

No 5. X-Men: Apocalypse – $10,000,000. Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $136,374,195.

Daisy Ridley our new Tomb Raider?

After the crazy success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, actress Daisy Ridley is well on her way to being one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.  According to a report from Deadline the young actress is at the top of a casting list to take the lead role of Laura Croft in a new Tomb Raider remake.  The film has been talked about at Warner Brothers and MGM for quite some time now, but the film seems to be picking up momentum.  In the same report Deadline does cautions that it is still very early in the casting process and that a new lead for the film is still not set in stone.

Daisy Ridley (Force Awakens)

A release date has not yet been set for the film.  However, with the rise of video game based movies in Hollywood, and the growing popularity of the new Tomb Raider video game, it is a pretty safe bet that we could see Laura Croft return to the big screen within the next two years. Star Was Sets Off Release Date Dominos!

Well this is just one huge mess!

Today Disney announced that they will be moving Star Wars: Episode VIII from it’s previously set release date of May 26, 2017, and will be placing it in the Winter of that year, December 15, 2017.  Follow me here, because this started a chain reactions that toppled over the all the other dominos other studios had in place.

Taking Star Wars’ place in the May gap will be Disney’s next installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.  This means it was actually moved up from its previous release date of July 7, 2017.  But wait, there’s more! Q&A: Ticket Inflation and More!

Hey guys! I got two questions to answer here, but both are going to nice, short, and sweet.

Remember, if you would like your question answered you can send it in on my Facebook Page, or email me at moviereelnews@gmail.com Once a week I will take a few questions and answer them.  If you do not see your question one week I will eventually get to it.

Both questions are written in by Michelle Blackwell.  Her first question is:

Which film earned the 2nd highest domestic box office earnings in history after adjusting for inflation?

A quick note about this before getting to the meat and potatoes of the question. Adjusting for ticket price inflation is not an exact science and can only be used to give us a general idea of what a movie might have made if released in a different year.  And that’s assuming it sold the same number of tickets.  A movie that sold 1,000 tickets in 1950 may not sell 1,000 tickets today.  But I can’t account for that. January 15-17 Box Office Results

In a surprising turn of events, the Buddy-Cop Comedy sequel to the 2014 film, Ride Along, staring Ice Cube and Kevin Heart, unseated Star Wars: The Force Awakens from its spot as Number 1 in the weekend box office for the first time since the film’s release back in December 18th, 2015.

This is no doubt due to Ride Along 2‘s relentlessness during the last few weeks of advertising leading up to the movie’s release.  You couldn’t turn on a TV program or watch a YouTube clip without seeing a trailer for it.  Also, the film’s 2014 predecessor was considered a success – making $155 Million on a budget of only $25 Million.

Other than the surprise of having Ride Along 2 take first place for this weekend’s box office, nothing else comes as too much of a surprise.  Check out the top 5 places of the January 15-17 box office below.

No 1. Ride Along 2 – $35,320,000 opening weekend.

No 2. The Revenant – $31,800,000. Bringing Total gross in 4th weekend to $89,974,769.

No 3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $26,377,000.  Bringing Total gross in 5th weekend to $852,309,841.

No 4. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi – $16,218,000 opening weekend.

No 5. Daddy’s Home – $9,543,000. Bringing total gross in 4th weekend to $129,499,102.

Star Trek Beyond First Trailer!

Paramount Pictures has dropped the first trailer for the next installment in their retconned Star Trek journey.

After 2013’s  Star Trek Into Darkness‘s mild fan success, Star Trek Beyond appears to have revved its engines in the hands of a new director, Justin Lin, who previously directed four of the Fast and the Furious movies.

The Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” provides an amped-up musical backdrop throughout the clip, also hearkening back to a pivotal scene from the 2009 reboot in which we see a young James T. Kirk rocking out to the classic ‘ 90s track while driving a stolen car.

Producing the film, not directing this time, is J.J. Abrams – who stepped down from directorial duties to focus on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and co-writer Simon Pegg are all back for this new film, and facing what is sure to be a very formidable new foe, Idris Elba.  Who is nearly rendered unrecognizable under heavy alien prosthetics.

Star Trek Beyond boldly goes into theaters on July 22, 2016.
