This past weekend was extremely rare. Most of the time when a film falls out of the top 5 box office positions it stays out. Very rarely does it happen to climb back in after being knocked out in the previous week. It is even more rare that it jumps up two positions! Congrats Captain Marvel for being that very rare film.
After the April 12-14 box office wrapped up, Captain Marvel was knocked out of the top 5 box office positions. However, it came back with a vengeance and not only managed to steal the number four position this past weekend (miraculously jumping over five), the amount of people that saw it in weekend six compared to weekend seven jumped up by six percent. This is rare because traditionally a film’s trajectory for the amount of tickets purchased drops close to 50 percent per weekend. It almost never goes up.
Also, The Curse of La Llorona managed to destroy initial projections of $17 Million predicted by Box Office Mojo and bring in just over $26.3 Million. For lower budgeted horror movie this is a huge success. Continue reading “April 19-21 Box Office Report”
Another weekend has gone by, and Shazam! continues to hold fast to its spot at the top of the box office. Everyone else fell behind by a mile!
This was an interesting weekend at the box office. In the top five positions there were three movies that are reboots of previously made movies, and one movie based on an already excising comic book IP. Meaning that Little, which came in second place, was the only movie based on an original idea that made it into the top five box office positions.
Two films made their opening weekend debut this past weekend, yet failed to make it into the number one spot – Little, which made $15 million and Hellboy, making only $12 Million. The returns for both of these films is below what outlets were predicting and below what the studios wanted Is this due to bad marketing? Probably not. Many, including myself, are speculating that their lack of box office success is due to the looming shadow that the upcoming Avengers: Endgame has been casting over the month of April. Many movie going audience members are saving their pennies so they can spend it on the newest Avengers film.
