March 29-31 Box Office Report

Another weekend done, means another box office is in the bag.

To nobody’s surprise Dumbo came out on top this weekend bringing in around $45 Million dollars, with Us and Captain Marvel trailing behind by quite a lot.  However, that was to expected. If you listened to last Friday’s podcast, then you’ll know that this is exactly what was predicted.

However, this weekend did bring with it one big shock.  Unplanned, a film that flew compleetly under my radar, made it into the number 4 box office spot.  This is extreamly shocking, and was ironicly unplanned, due to the lack of hype around this movie – or so I thought.

I had never seen a trailer for Unplanned, never heard of it, didn’t know it was coming out.  Yet, despite my lack of knowledge it struck a cord with its targeted audience and they came out in droves to support it.  The film managed to making just over $6 Million on a reported budget of the same amount.  The film was out for only its first weekend and already made its money back.

Check out the full box office breakdown of the top five spots below!

  • No 1. Dumbo – $45,000,000 in its first weekend of release.
  • No 2. Us – $33,605,000. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $128,220,440.
  • No 3. Captain Marvel – $20,5000,000. Bringing its total gross in its 4th weekend to $353,805,815.
  • No 4. Unplanned – $6,382,298. in its first weekend of release.
  • No 5. Five Feet Apart – $6,197,557. Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $35,823,158.

What did you think of these box office numbers?  Did you know about Unplanned coming out?  Where your predictions correct?  Leave a comment below and let’s make a discussion out of it.

‘Dora the Explorer’ Trailer Drops

The first trailer for Dora and the Lost City of Gold has dropped, and it shows that the film may actually take quite a departure from the Nickelodeon show.

While the show is known for teaching really young kids what a square and a spoon look like, this movie isn’t taking an educational route at all.  It is more like a young Tomb Raider movie.  I mean, come on – Dora throws a knife!

Check out the trailer below.

Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon team up to bring this action version of Dora the Explorer. The film stars Isabela Moner in the lead role with Eva Longoria and Michael Pena as her parents.

It’s a interesting take on the character.  Having Dora and her classmates kidnapped, then having to escape the bad guys while finding a lost city in the middle of a jungle.  Let’s see if the studios can pull it off.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold hits theaters on August 2 of this year.

March 22-24 Box Office Report

Another weekend at the box office and another weekend of annalists getting their predictions very wrong!

Jordan Peele‘s Us, his directorial follow up to the smash hit Get Out, soared past all expectations making over $70 million domestically. Making this film the 3rd highest horror debut of all time! It also became the biggest domestic opening weekend of an original R-rated film, beating out the previous record holder, Ted.

Captain Marvel also managed to make another $35 million – continuing to build its earnings and get ever so closer to the $1 billion mark worldwide. It is easy to speculate that Captain Marvel will become a billion dollar earner within the next two weeks.

Check out the official top five positions at the box office below!

  • No 1. Us – $71,117,625 in its first weekend of release.
  • No 2. Captain Marvel – $34,271,793. Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $320,749,628.
  • No 3. Wonder Park – $8,761,117. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $29,238,421.
  • No 4. Five Feet Apart – $8,547,539. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $26,258,603.
  • No 5. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World– $6,520,065. Bringing its total gross in its 5th weekend to $145,739,695.

Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ Drops First Trailer

Well, it has finally happened.   After a year of only hearing about news and rumors surrounding the 9th Quentin Tarantino film we are finally getting our first look at it.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt together for the first time in the backdrop of a 1960s Hollywood.  The acting duo play Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth, a washed-up actor and his long-time stunt double.

Check out the trailer below!

Tarantino wrote, directed, and produced Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and was inspired to create this film due to his upbringing in 1960s Tinseltown amidst LA’s hippie-crazed counterculture.  The two characters Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth live next door to Sharon Tate, played by Margot Robbie, in 1969 – durring the rise of the Charles Manson cult.

The film also stars Luke Perry, Damian Lewis, Dakota Fanning, and Bruce Dern who is playing the rancher who owned the infamous ranch where Manson and his followers lived.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is set to release on July 26th.

Review of ‘Five Feet Apart’

Five Feet Apart is the newest film in the illness teen romance genera, a film about two teens living with cystic fibrosis, and despite their limitations, try to make their love work no matter the distance between them.

This is the first full length film directed by Justin Baldoni and stars Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse in the leading roles. This is Sprouse’s first time leading a full length film. The film is also written by new film writers Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis. Starting to notice a pattern here? There are a lot of first timers attached to this project – and it shows.
