This was as crazy weekend in the world of movie releases. It was the first weekend in 2017 where three major films where released all in the same weekend and competing for the number one spot. All newly released films did make it into the top three spots, and it is about how most predicted it would be.
The kid friendly film, The LEGO Batman Movie, made it into the number one spot with just over $50 Million – no shock to anybody there. It’s marketing campaign was knocking it out of the park since day one.
In second place is Fifty Shades Darker, once again, this is not a shock to anybody. With the success of the book series, and with the financial success of the first movie, it is not a surprise that the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel made it into the second spot behind The LEGO Batman movie. However, Fifty Shades of Grey made over $85 million on its opening weekend, and it had a 73% drop between its first and second weekend. Fifty Shades Darker barely made over half of what its predecessor did, and it is not out of the realm of possibilities that it has a similar drop off. It will be interesting to see where it ends up in the coming weeks.
Falling in the 3rd slot for this past weekend is John Wick: Chapter Two. Now, opposite of the film sitting just above it in the Box Office, John Wick: Chapter Two made more money in its opening weekend than its predecessor. John Wick only made $14 Million in its opening weekend, meaning that John Wick: Chapter Two made more than doubled what the first film in the franchise did. Which is awesome! So while it is sitting below two more films this past weekend, when breaking down the financial stats it is sitting just fine in its opening weekend.
