March 22-24 Box Office Report

Another weekend at the box office and another weekend of annalists getting their predictions very wrong!

Jordan Peele‘s Us, his directorial follow up to the smash hit Get Out, soared past all expectations making over $70 million domestically. Making this film the 3rd highest horror debut of all time! It also became the biggest domestic opening weekend of an original R-rated film, beating out the previous record holder, Ted.

Captain Marvel also managed to make another $35 million – continuing to build its earnings and get ever so closer to the $1 billion mark worldwide. It is easy to speculate that Captain Marvel will become a billion dollar earner within the next two weeks.

Check out the official top five positions at the box office below!

  • No 1. Us – $71,117,625 in its first weekend of release.
  • No 2. Captain Marvel – $34,271,793. Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $320,749,628.
  • No 3. Wonder Park – $8,761,117. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $29,238,421.

March 15-17 Box Office Report

Another weekend in the word of movies completed, and surprisingly most of the films made more money than anybody predicted.

As predicted in last weeks podcast episode, Captain Marvel stayed in the number one spot  However, my prediction was not completely accurate – the Marvel film dropped only 55.7%, as apposed to the 70% predicted.

The film garnered a lot praise from audiences after its first weekend and it is no surprise that it had lots of repeat viewing as well as viewership from those that may not normally go to a superhero film.  After this past weekend Captain Marvel is showing that it may just cross the coveted one billion dollar mark.

New release films Wonder Park, and Five Feet Apart, despite coming behind Captain Marvel managed to bring in more box office dollars than had been predicted. Both managed to cross over the $10 Million mark, something that many did not think was possible going against a Marvel superhero film in its second week.

Check out the full box office breakdown below!

No 1. Captain Marvel – $67,988,130. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $264,884,063.

No 2. Wonder Park – $15,853,646 in its first weekend of release.

No 3. Five Feet Apart – $13,190,286 in its first weekend of release.

No 4. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World$9,277,310.  Bringing its total gross in its 4th weekend to $135,576,405.

March 8-10 Box Office Report

We just finished with the first weekend that featured Marvel’s first film of 2019, and the box office reflects it!

Captain Marvel just released to great success!  The film became the number one opening weekend origin story superhero movie, and became the 10th biggest opening for a comic book based superhero film of all time!  This puts Captain Marvel in such company as The Dark Knight, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War.

The success of Captain Marvel comes on the heels of 2 months of “controversy” claiming that actress Brie Larson did not want to have white males reviewing her film.  Outlets running these headlines created this fantasy in order to try and hinder the box office of a film with a strong female character in the lead, and they failed.  They failed miserably in misogynistic mission to drag Larson and her film through the mud.  The film made over $153 Million!

The rest of the films in the top 5 box office positions did not make much, but that is to be expected.  Captain Marvel was the only newly released film this past weekend, therefore all of the movies were only able to get the scraps left over by the new Marvel film.

Check out the box office breakdown below!

No 1. Captain Marvel – $153,433,423 in its first weekend of release.

No 2. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World $14,685,005. Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $119,651,130.

No 3. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral $12,465,383 Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $46,295,193.

No 4. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – $3,868,248. Bringing its total gross in its 5th weekend to $97,153,209.

No 5. Alita: Battle Angel – $3,215,344.  Bringing its total gross in its 4th weekend to $78,361,408.

March 1-3 Box Office Report

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has managed to stay in the number one spot for the second week in a row, beating out the newly released Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral by just $3 Million. The third movie in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise continues to be a money making juggernaut despite 2019’s trend of being a pretty slow box office year so far.

According to a report put out by The Hollywood Reporter Winter 2019 box office revenue has hit an 8-Year low in the U.S, and after this past box office result it has not gotten any better.

Looking at the top 5 movies at the box office there are three films that could be described as “blockbusters,” and yet none of them have created enough revenue to get 2019 out of this box office slump.

Check out the full breakdown of the top 5 box office spots below.

No 1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World – $30,028,540. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $97,678,815.

No 2. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral$27,062,332 in its first weekend or release.

No 3. Alita: Battle Angel – $7,221,417.  Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $72,452,725.

No 4. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – $6,600,258. Bringing its total gross in its 4th weekend to $91,660,298.

No 5.  Fighting with My Family – $4,661,991.  Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $14,916,612.

This next weekend will have the release of Marvel’s Captain Marvel, and we can expect to see huge box office numbers. It has been speculated that this will be the film to kick off the box office this year. However, we will have to wait and see.

“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’ Trailer

The third, and reportedly final film in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise has dropped a new trailer online and showcases just why this franchise is so successful – it full of heart, has great characters, and still funny.

This new trailer for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World shows that the creators will dive deeper into two key story threads; toothless encountering a potential mate and stopping the villainous dragon hunter Grimmel from making his way to Berk with the intention of capturing as many dragons as possible.

It stands to reason that The Hidden World will meet the very high standards of the previous two films in the franchise.  But we shall have to see for ourselves.  The film will be released into theaters on February 22, 2019.

What did you think of this trailer?  Will you be seeing the this third instalment in the franchise?  Leave a comment below and lets make a discussion about it.
