It was announced late last year that Disney was concidering adding the Marvel martial artist character, Shang-Chi, to the already growing roster for phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, according to reports by Deadline, they have moved passed considering it to hiring a director.
Short Term 12 director Destin Daniel Cretton has been selected to direct Marvel’s first film that will star an Asian protagonist in the leading role. At the moment Cretton is directing Just Mercy with Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan so it is fare to assume Shang-Chi will be his next project.
You can be forgiven for not knowing the character of Shang-Chi, his comic sales were never at the top of the charts. He first appeared in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 1973. It launched around the time that the globally successful film Enter the Dragon was released. In the comic Shang-Chi was raised, educated, and trained in martial arts in a Chinese compound closed off to the outside world. It is in his seclusion that he managed to develop unsurpassed skills in Kung Fu.
At the moment there is no release date for the Shang-Chi movie, but this is to be expected. Marvel is keeping their lips shut about future projects until after Avengers: Endgame finishes its run in the theater. However, my estimation is that it will be in the early part of 2021.

In a world where Hollywood seems eager to mine every successful property for reboots, spinoffs, and sequels, we shouldn’t be surprised that this happened. According to a report by Deadline director Ridley Scott has begun the process in developing a sequel to academy award winning, and beloved 2000 film, Gladiator.
According to the report Scott will continue the story in Gladiator 2 with Lucius, the son of Lucilla, who was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). In the 2000 film, Lucius and his mother Lucilla are saved by Maximus (Russell Crowe) and in doing so this act left a very strong impression on Lucius.
Now, while many would be quick to think this sounds terrible, don’t do it. This story is better than what Scott was rumored to be doing with the property a few years ago when he was planning on resurrecting Maximus (spoiler alert for the 18 year old movie, he dies), and continuing the story with the original gladiator, Russell Crowe once again in the leading role.
So, yea, could be worse. However, is it needed? We will have to find the answer to that for ourselves once the movie hits theaters. At this time there is no expected release date.
What do you think of a Gladiator 2? Will you go out and see it, or no matter what going to avoid it? Leave a comment below and let’s make a discussion out of it.
After the crazy success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, actress Daisy Ridley is well on her way to being one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. According to a report from Deadline the young actress is at the top of a casting list to take the lead role of Laura Croft in a new Tomb Raider remake. The film has been talked about at Warner Brothers and MGM for quite some time now, but the film seems to be picking up momentum. In the same report Deadline does cautions that it is still very early in the casting process and that a new lead for the film is still not set in stone.
A release date has not yet been set for the film. However, with the rise of video game based movies in Hollywood, and the growing popularity of the new Tomb Raider video game, it is a pretty safe bet that we could see Laura Croft return to the big screen within the next two years. Paramount Pictures is ready to dive in with its movie transfer of the global hit TV series Baywatch. It has already been announced that Seth Gordon will be directing the film and that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron are set to play the male leads.
It is now being reported by Deadline that Paramount Pictures has a short list of actresses who will test for the female lead.
The names being reported are: Alexandra Daddario (San Andreas, Percy Jackson), Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars, Elvis & Nixon), Nina Dobrev (Vampire Diaries), Alexandra Shipp (Straight Outta Compton, X-Men Apocalypse), Shelley Hennig (Teen Wolf), Bianca Santos (The Duff) and Denyse Tontz (Big Time Rush).
The film is set to start it’s production in early 2016. So by then we should know more about who from this list was cast, and who not on this list made it on.
Who knows if this is going to be any good. But at this point I’ll watch anything that has Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in it. Adding beautiful women to a film never hurt either.
