James Gunn Get Reinstated As Director Of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’!

Last July there was a great disturbance in the force, as if a million Marvel fans suddenly cried out in terror. Of course this is in reference to Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2 director James Gun being fired by Disney. The moment the news dropped it was all the internet could talk about and it felt nearly impossible to avoid the topic. Well, it looks like those cries were all for nothing because Gunn has been reinstated by to directed the currently untitled Guardians of the Galaxy 3!

According to Deadline, who broke the story about Gunn’s return, the decision had actually been made months ago and they were sitting on announcing the news until now. Discussions first began between Gunn and Walt Disney Studio chairman Alan Horn in the fall when Horn was persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and handling of the situation.

Those who do not know, Gunn was fired by Disney when an alt-right journalist brought to public consciences decade old tweets where Gunn “joked” about pedophilia and rape. At the time Gunn was just starting his film making career with Troma Entertainment, a company that solely creates movies that can best be described as “shock exploitation films” (films that rely on the shock of lurid or graphicly explicit content). While the tweets were absolutely in poor taste, and honestly not at all funny, they were apart of the film culture he was in at the time. There were no reports or evidence of Gunn ever engaging in the behavior he made fun of. In blunt terms, he was fired because of his tweets, not his actions.

Word was spread quickly about his tweets by outlets like Fox News who reported that the tweets were brought to the surface by this journalist as payback for Gunn being outwardly critical of President Donald Trump. Disney made the knee-jerk reaction not sever ties with Gunn immediately after the decade-old tweets went viral.

Many Marvel fans, as well as the entire Guardians cast, stood in Gunn’s corner when word of his firing spread. All claiming that they wanted Gunn back on the project and that the satirical tweets do not match his character in the slightest. An open letter to Disney was signed by the entire Guardians cast; Chris Pratt, Zoey Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley cooper, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, and Pom Klementieff who pleaded for Gunn’s return. Well, their wish was granted.

Many are wondering, correctly, what will happen to Suicide Squad 2, a film that Gunn was just hired to direct at Warner Bros., now that Gunn has been reinstated at Disney? According to the same report, Marvel Studios has agreed to start production on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after Gunn completes his work on Suicide Squad 2. Making Gunn the first director to work with both DC and Marvel at the same time.

This was the apology Gunn delivered last July when the tweets became public knowledge again:

“My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time. Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. All I can do now, beyond offering my sincere and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Love to all.”

There is no official date on when Disney will begin production of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, however it is safe to assume it will be sometime after August 6th 2021, the date Suicide Squad 2 is set to release. My prediction is that we will get the next movie sometime in 2023.

What do you think of Gunn coming back? Should Disney have left him alone? Or are you happy to see his return? Leave a comment below and let’s make a discussion out of it.
