This seems to be the month of announcing anime based, live-action movies. However, this is probably the best project to be announced so far.
Andy Muschietti, who masterfully directed the nightmare inducing, IT, has been tagged to direct the live-action adaptation of the heavily adored manga and anime series Attack on Titan. Muschietti will be working in tandem with Warner Brothers to get this project done.
Attack on Titan is one of the most popular manga series, selling over 76 million copies since its inception in 2009. It tells the story of man’s struggle to survive in world overrun by giant, man-eating humanoid creatures known as Titans. It is a fight for humanity’s survival amidst its almost certain extinction.
For years many have been clamoring for a live-action rendition of this property and it has finally come to pass. There was a Japanese live action version released in 2015 to mild success. The project was low budget, so hopefully a higher budgeted project will get more recognition.
The Titans in Attack on Titan are absolutely fear inducing, something that director Muschietti should be accustomed to creating due to the great success he had with the nightmarish IT. The film shattered box office records when it hit theaters last year, earning $700 million worldwide. Muschietti is currently working on the sequel IT: Chapter 2, with a hard release date of September 6th of 2019.
There is no release date set for the live-action Attack on Titan, however, this project is in its early stages so expect something around 2020 or 2021.
What do you think of this project? Are you a fan, or at least seen or read Attack on Titan. Is Muschietti a good fit for this project, or do you think there is someone better? Leave a comment below and let’s make a discussion out of it.
