With the great box office results of Venom over the past weekend it is no surprise that the film will be getting a sequel in the very near future. And with that comes the question of, “Will this movie be rated R?”
Mild Spoiler for Venom end credit scene: In the mid-credit scene we see that Woody Harrelson will most likely be appearing in Venom‘s sequel as the psychotic and terrifying villain, Carnage. Anybody with Spider-Man knowledge knows that Cletus Kasidy, who is the host for the Carnage symbiote, is a deranged serial killer. Therefore, it is not too unreasonable to think that a sequel with Carnage in it, despite Venom being PG-13, would get that coveted R rating. Well, not so according to Venom producer Avi Arad that told Collider:
“When you hear, Carnage, the only think you can think of is R. But, if you know his story, if you really know the comic, there’s no R here. He’s a tortured soul. It’s not about what he does, because we never have to show the knife going from here to there, and the blood is pouring. What you have to show is, what is the motivation? Was he born like that, or is he someone we should feel for, because if you are succeeding in making a villain someone you can feel for, jackpot.”
So, there it is, the producer of the film said that he has no intention of making Venom 2 with an R rating. What he says is true, in the original comics where Carnage is introduced there is not an abundance of swearing, nudity, or blood and guts. So why should the movie need an R rating? Yes, later iterations of the comic eventually become more adult themed, but all comic characters eventually have a mature run – that doesn’t mean all comic movies should get that R rating.
Also, Sony may still have some plans on tying their universe into Marvel’s universe. A PG-13 rating will help to keep everything a little bit more even. This type of merger is still just speculation, and Sony may not ever integrate Venom into the Avenger’s universe. However, it is still a possibility at this time.
What do yo think of this? Do you think a movie with Carnage in it should be rated R? Leave a comment below and let’s make a discussion out of it.
