September 21-23 Box Office!

This weekend came with a couple of surprises!

First off, the Jack Black and Cate Blanchett led film, The House With A Clock In Its Walls opened up much higher than most would have guessed.  In its first weekend the movie was able to bring in just above $26.6 Million.  What makes this such a surprise is that the movie was not marketed well.  The trailers were very “meh,” and there didn’t seem to be a lot of rabid fans of the book that the movie is based off of.  However, the film was still able to have a pretty successful opening weekend.

Another surprise is that Crazy Rich Asians still managed to stay in the top 5, and its in its 6th weekend of release.  The stopping power of this romantic comedy has been insane. No other film in the top five has been at the box office longer than 3 weeks other than Crazy Rich Asians. Many other films have come and gone since it came out back in August, yet it continues to hang in there.  Can it make one more week?

In not so great news, The Predator continues to bleed money, dropping nearly 63% since its first opening weekend.  The average movie drops between 35-45% between weekend 1 and weekend 2.  Very rarely is anywhere near the 60% range.  Many are speculating that there will not be anymore movies in this existing franchise, and I tend to agree.

Check out the list below to see the full breakdown of the top five in this weekend’s box office.

No 1. The House With A Clock In Its Walls– $26,608,020 in its first weekend of release.
