With the end of this weekend comes a new box office report, the first in while on this site. And with this new report comes not so great news for 10th Century Fox’s The Predator.
There hasn’t been a film in The Predator franchise since the Adrien Brody iteration, Predators, in 2010. This weekend’s release came short of the 2010 version, and cost nearly double to make. This does not bode well for the franchise.
There are many reasons this could have happened. Many are quick to blame the controversy surrounding director Shane Black who gave a small role to his friend who is a convicted sex offender, a real predator. Once the news of this got out just weeks before the opening of the film many speculated that audiences would boycott the movie. And while this is absolutely a factor in the film’s weak box office performance, it is not the main reason. Marketing for the film has been lackluster since the film’s announcement, and once the movie was shown to critics they were quick to destroy the film. The Predator still sits at a 33% on rotten tomatoes, and has an audience score of 51%. It all these factors lumped together have caused the movie to fail at the box office. After this past weekend’s performance, The Predator may be the last film in this installment of the franchise. Is it time for a reboot? Probably.
Outside of The Predator box office disappointment not much of note went on. New releases A Simple Favor, and White Boy Rick came out with mild success. Nothing that wasn’t already predicted for these small budget movies. Crazy Rich Asians, that just finished its 5th weekend still manages to stay in the top 5, bringing in another $8.7 Million. This means that this romance movie has a combined total gross so far of nearly $150 Million. And it was made on a very small budget of $30 Million. It’s no wonder a sequel is coming for Crazy Rich Asians.
