Rampage, the classic arcade game from the 80’s, has had a film project in the works for over a year now and already has Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson cast in the movie. However, Joe Manganiello, known for his work in True Blood and Magic Mike XXL, as well as Marley Shelton, best known for her role in Planet Terror as Dr. Dakota Block, are in current talks with New Line to be cast in Rampage alongside Dwayne Johnson according to a report put out by The Hollywood Reporter.
This project is going to be the third collaboration between Johnson and director Brad Peyton, having worked on both Journey 2: The Mysterious Island as well as San Andreas. While seeing the director of Journey 2 work on this movie may not give one confidence, knowing that that director also worked on San Andreas, the most successful original blockbuster to be released in summer of 2015, should build you up. If they can capture the fun that was demonstrated in San Andreas then Rampage should be an entertaining video game movie.
Rampage (the video game) was released in 1986 and puts players in control of one of three monsters: A giant ape, a giant lizard, or a giant werewolf. In the game the monsters run across the U.S., fighting the military and destroying as many landmarks as possible. While this may not seem like much of a plot for a full length live action movie, I’m sure they are going to bring a King Kong/Godzilla vibe where Johnson, Manganiello, and Shelton must fight to stop the rampaging monsters.
New Line is set to release Rampage into theaters on April 20th, 2018.
