Ernest Cline‘s famous 2011 Novel “Ready Player One” is very well known for not only being a best selling novel, but also for its hundreds of movie, TV, music, and pop culture references that harken back to the 80’s. Some of the best references in the novel are Steven Spielberg movie references.
Funny enough, Steven Spielberg is now in the process of making a film adaptation of Cline’s novel, and it looks like production is now full steam ahead!
Set pictures of Ready Player One have been released on Twitter thanks to twitter user Michelle Green. The pictures portray spray painted images of different 80’s and 70’s icons like DC Comic’s The Flash, Street Fighter’s Sagat, the mogwai, Gizmo, from the Spielberg produced Gremlins, and the Shark from the Spielberg directed Jaws!
It is hard to speculate in what setting these pictures are in – either our crumbling dystopian future, or from the OASIS, a virtual reality characters in the novel go to in order to escape the crumbling society they live in . Either way, its pretty cool.
Check out the pictures below!
More than likely these pictures are going to be seen in the background of some shots and not front and center. But it is still cool to know they will be there – and that this film is going to be full of references just like in the book.
Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts/Parzival, Olivia Cooke as Art3mis, Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow, Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento, T.J. Miller as iR0k and Mark Rylance as James Halliday.
In the novel, James Halliday, who was raised in the 1980’s, passes away and leaves the heir to his multi billion dollar company to be decided by winning an impossible Easter egg hunt that takes place within the OASIS – a virtual universe that can be accessed with a visor and haptic gloves. The universe is made up of thousands of planets that are all themed around 80’s pop culture, which Hallliday has made clear would be essential to finding his egg.
As already mention, there are many Spielberg references within the novel, and when asked if Spielberg would include those in his film adaptation he said the following:
I think we were pretty awesome in the ‘80s. I hope the movie returns all of us to the awesomeness of the ‘80s. I love the ‘80s. I think one of the reasons I decided to make the movie was that it brought me back to the ‘80s and lets me do anything I want, except for with my own movies. I’ve cut most of my movies out of [Ernest Cline’s] book. Except for the DeLorean and a couple of other things that I had something to do with, I cut a lot of my own references out of the ‘80s. I was very happy to see there was enough without me that made the ‘80s a great time to grow up.
As someone who has read the book (and loved it – you should check it out) I really hope he keeps some of his references in it. But Spielberg is right, there are plenty more references to be made without his being there. I counted a total of 83 different film references alone – which doesn’t count the hundreds of songs and other pop culture references in the book as well.
Ready Player One is set to open in theaters on March 30th, 2018. And I for one have not been this excited for a Spielberg film in years.
