We may have our Mary Jane Watson in upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

It looks like after months of speculating we now know that Mary Jane Watson will be making an appearance in next summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Not only that, but it looks like we know who is playing the iconic spidey love interest.

According to a report released by TheWrap, Disney Channel star Zendaya, who stared in “Shake It Up!” and “K.C. Undercover,” is playing the Peter Parker love interest, Mary Jane Watson.

Some may remember that she had already been cast in a role back in march, but we were told that she was going to be playing a character named Michelle.  However, according the article, this is no longer the case – meaning that Zendaya’s casting as Michelle was a pseudonym in order to keep secrecy surrounding the project.

It should be pointed out that neither Sony, Marvel Studios, nor Disney have confirmed these reports thus far – meaning this is still considered speculation.  According to the article put out by TheWrap, the information about Zendaya’s casting came from “two individuals with knowledge of the project….”Alongside Zendaya, Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland as the webslinger as well as Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr., and Michael Keaton – who is rumored to be playing the villain, Vulture.  The film is also directed by Jon Watts

If this report turns out to be true, it is still to early to speculate if Zendaya’s casting as Mary Jane is good or bad.  At this point I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to Sony, and to an extent, Marvel’s producer, Kevin Feige, who is no doubt the overseer of all the casting decisions being made by Sony.

The film is set to be released July 7, 2017.
