June 10-12 Box Office Results

This is the first weekend in 2016 where the top three spots at the box office are actually held by three newly released films.

Its not surprising where the results landed this past weekend, however there is one thing to point out.  In only its third weekend of release X-Men: Apocalypse is already in the fifth spot on the list and will no doubt be out of the top five by the next weekend. For this year, this is the fastest that a comic book movie has left the top five at the box office.  You would not be wrong in saying that the run for the X-Man film is very disappointing – seeing as it is still about $42,000,000 away from breaking even with its reported budget.  You can check out the rest of the results below.

No 1. The Conjuring 2$40,350,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 2. Warcraft $24,356,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 3. Now You See Me 2 – $23,025,000 in its first weekend of release.

No 4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows $14,800,000. Bringing its total gross in its 2nd weekend to $61,039,783.

No 5. X-Men: Apocalypse – $10,000,000. Bringing its total gross in its 3rd weekend to $136,374,195.

Looking over these results, most would classify Warcraft and Now You See Me 2 as “bombs” at the box office.  However, I do not see it that way.

While Warcraft only brought in $24 million in the U.S. box office with a reported production budget of $160 million, the fantasy film has already made its money back in the Chinese box office – making $156 million in its first 5 days of opening. What makes this so crazy is that in just 5 days Warcraft has already surpassed what Star Wars: The Force Awakens made in its entire run.

And as for Now You See Me 2, the film made pretty close to what its predecessor did on its opening weekend.  I believe that Lionsgate is planning to make its money back on DVD and VOD sales – just as the first movie did.

But what do you thing? Do you think X-Men: Apocalypse is the only “failure” of this past weekend’s box office? Or would you count others as a box office bomb as well?  Leave a comment below!
