I have a great question that comes in from Alex Riley who sent me the question via Facebook; and she writes:
Rumor has it that there will be a Top Gun 2…how do you think that will compare to the first?
Short, sweet, and to the point. I like it.
As for the first part of the question I can indeed confirm for you that as of right Top Gun 2 has been greenlit by Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productionsand is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer – who was actually the producer for the first film as well.
The film, however, is in its very early stages of production. As of right now the script is still being written by both writers Peter Craig (wrote Hunger Games Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2) and Justin Marks (wrote The Jungle Book). Also, there is still no director attached to the film at this time. So they still need to decide that. However, it has been confirmed that Tom Cruise is indeed reprising his role as Maverick, as well as Val Kilmer coming back as Iceman.
I have to say with both actors reprising their roles I am actually looking forward to this. However, I have to believe that they will be leaving out the famous volleyball scene….have you seen Kilmer lately?
Although there is still not a lot known surrounding the project, last year during a group press meet Skydance CEO David Ellison and CCO Dana Goldberg we asked about the status of Top Gun 2 and they were able to give a bit of incite into the potential plot of the film.
When asked how the new film would look with the current changes that have happened to the U.S Navy since the fist film was made and how it relates to Maveric, Ellison answed by saying:
“…I think this is a moive that should be in 3-D and in IMAX, and again something that you can shoot practically. As everyone knows with Tom, he is 100% going to want to be in those airplanes shooting in practically. When you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out. This world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today where it’s done technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce so it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what the culture is today are the fun things that we’re gonna get to dive into this movie.”
So yea, the movie is going to be about Maverick vs. Drones, instead of Maverick vs. MIG-28’s.
As for the second part of your question: I think that it is a little too early to be too critical of the movie. However, if I’m being honest I do not feel that Drones are going to make this movie awesome.
On the other hand, Tom Cruise has done a great job of selecting good movies to be in over the last couple of years. And I do not think that he will agree to do the movie unless he is able to be a producer on the film, as well as give the script and story his approval. So far he has put out movies such as Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Jack Reacher, Edge of Tomorrow, and most recently Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. All of these great films, and all films that he is listed as a producer on. And I don’t think this film will be any different.
Hey, thanks for the question Alex!
